Shah Rukh Khan's Raees gets banned in Pakistan; censor board says it undermines Islam

Shah Rukh Khan and Mahira Khan starrer Raees will not be released in Pakistan, a news that will obviously leave the makers upset

Shah Rukh Khan starrer Raees has been banned in Pakistan after the censor board that looked into the film found the theme and content objectionable. The board said the movie showed Muslims in a bad light and it defamed Islam, hence it can not be allowed to screen in Pakistan. Interestingly, the lead actress of the film Mahira Khan is a Pakistani citizen.

It was only last week that the distributors of Raees had submitted the film to the censor board for clearance. This happened after the Pakistani government lifted a ban on all Indian movies owing to the hostile relations between the two countries.

After the ban was lifted Kaabil and Ae Dil Hai Mushkil were slated to release across the border.

But Raees won’t see the same fate as the other films. However, an official from Hum Films refused to comment on the news and said no official statement about the ban of the film was given to them yet.

However, a close source told PTI that the ban has indeed been imposed on Raees because it showed Muslims as criminals, wanted persons and terrorists. He added that the chairman of the censor board in Pakistan, Mobashir Hasan backed this decision.

Cinephiles in Pakistan were quite excited for the film. Mahira, too, had said in a recent press conference that she was glad her movie would release in Pakistan.

Earlier, the film was in turbulent waters in India owing to Mahira’s presence. There were many reports floating around that the makers were thinking of chopping Mahira’s screen time after few outfits demanded a ban on the film. After a lot of hoopla the film finally released in India and performed well at the Box Office.
