Mumbai’s famous Marine Drive and Mahim Bay will soon get a makeover in the next four years. The State Maritime Authority wants to create two new artificial one at Dadar Chowpatty and the other near Girgaum Chowpatty. The authority will spend more than Rs 400 crore to lay out a beach at the seafronts.
The projects are slated to kick start in 2018–19, will be partly funded by the Asian Development Bank.
Earlier, the maritime authority has successfully created an artificial shore at Raigad wants to create and wants to repeat the same.
Presently, the city’s coastline is anchored with tetrapods. During the makeover, the tetrapods will be replaced with the sand, which will let people access the sea.
Not only this, the makeover of Marine Drive and Mahim Bay will be more picturesque but will also provide more open space in comparison to Mumbaikars what they generally get.
According to a report published in the ‘Mumbai Mirror’, the Maharashtra Maritime Board deputy director, Jitendra Raisinghani said, “around 10 lakh cubic metre of sand will be required to create a beach spread out over 1000×100 square metre. And the sand for such a project in Mumbai will have to be transported by sea, on barges, which is likely to protract the time and cost of the project.”
Similarly, the Maharashtra Maritime Board will need to procure around 15 lakh cubic metre of sand to extend Girgaum Chowpatty up to Marine Drive Flyover, to provide a beach that will be a kilometre long and 200 metre wide. The outlay is pegged at Rs 240 crore.
