IPL 10 The curious case of Manoj Tiwary's 'breaking bat' story against Praveen Kumar

Manoj Tiwary scored 31 runs from 27 balls featuring 2 fours and 1 six and helped Rising Pune Supergiant post a respectable total

The Match 13 of Indian Premier League (IPL) 10 was taking it’s natural course as Rising Pune Supergiant (RPS) were on their way to post a fighting total against Gujarat Lions (GL) but something weird happened in 19th over bowled by Pravin Kumar. Well, the headline already suggests that Manoj Tiwary broke his bat on Praveen Kumar’s delivery but let me walk you through in the details of the event that happened on the field at Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Rajkot.

Praveen came round the wicket to Tiwary in order to bowl a yorker length delivery. Tiwary was wise too as he rocked back into the crease trying to dig that one out and hit it towards deep mid-wicket boundary. Not just Tiwary’s bat broke as he tried to dig that one out from the crease.

If breaking his bat on the field was not bizarre, the video shows him running with it too and using it to turn back from the non-striker end. He ran back to his end trying to steal two runs, putting a dive in as well.

As soon as the bat broke, commentator Danny Morrison said, “New bat please”. They were left in fits when Tiwary ran between the wickets with the broken bat. Commentator Isa Guha too laughed hard when Tiwary put in a dive with the broken bat along with Morrison.

Tiwary scored 31 runs from 27 deliveries which included two fours and one six. He came at a crucial stage when the wickets were falling at a regular interval, Tiwary stitched a partnership of 47 runs with Ankit Sharma off 29 balls. RPS scored 171 runs in the first innings only to be outclassed by Andre Tye’s hat-trick in IPL debut.

Later on, Gujarat Lions chased down the target with ease with the help of quickfire innings from Brendon McCullum, Dwayne Smith, Suresh Raina and Aaron Finch.
