Though the game number 50 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 10 between the Gujarat Lions (GL) and Delhi Daredevils (DD) had nothing to do with the forthcoming play-offs but it was a fight for not finishing last in the points table. Despite a huge target of 196 runs to chase in 20 overs, Zaheer Khan & Co. registered a terrific 2 wickets win over Gujarat at Green Park Stadium, Kanpur, on May 10.
Shreyas Iyer was nominated as the Man of the Match for his phenomenal inning of 96 off 57 balls. With this win, Delhi earned 2 more points and with a total of 10 points, they are at the 6th position in the points table. While Gujarat are still at the 7th position with a total of 8 points.
Earlier, Delhi skipper Zaheer Khan won the toss and elected to field while invited the home team to bat first. Gujarat had an average start but later, with the help of Aaron Finch’s fantastic inning of 69 runs off 39 runs along with Dinesh Karthik’s 40 off 28 balls, they successfully put 195 runs on the board.
In order to chase the target of 196 runs, as usual, the opening pair of Sanju Samson and Karun Nair entered the field. Delhi had a poor start as they lost two early wickets of Sanju Samson (10) and Rishabh Pant (4) within 3 overs. Post these losses, Karun Nair and Shreyas Iyer took the charge and started scoring runs at a faster rate.
Nair played a quick inning of 30 runs off 15 balls while Shreyas Iyer had his beast mode on. After Nair’s dismissal, Iyer though went through the lack of partners but he didn’t lose his confidence of scoring runs. After hitting 2 sixes and 15 fours, Shreyas Iyer ended up scoring 96 runs off 57 balls and got unfortunately dismissed in the last over by Basil Thampi.
Mohammad Shami (4*) and Amit Mishra (8*) played till the end where Mishra hit the final nail in the coffin and hit a Dil-Scoop shot in the end and scored the winning runs for his team. With two balls to spare, Delhi Daredevils defeated Gujarat Lions by 2 wickets.
