A collection of nearly 400 jewels, ornaments and gemstones from India went on sale in New York City on June 19.
The ‘Maharajas & Mughal Magnificence’ collection featured ceremonial objects and artworks spanning over 500 years of history from the Indian royalty and the Mughal period.
These include Maharani of Patiala’s Ruby Beads Choker, Nizam of Hyderabad’s 100-carat diamond necklace as well as Ruby & Diamond Enamelled Emerald Parrot, Rajmata Gayatri Devi’s pearl & diamond Cartier necklace, Shah Jahan’s dagger, Tipu Sultan’s gold frame pendant and ‘Mirror of Paradise’ excavated from the Golconda mines.
The items are owned by the Qatari royal family and the auction was expected to be the biggest in history, surpassing $115.9 million auction of Elizabeth Taylor’s jewels.
