Bengaluru’s civic body, Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), has invited the ire of locals after it proposed a set of new rules for licensing of pet dogs. BBMP has limited the number of dogs in a single apartment to one, while independent homes can have a maximum of three dogs.
According to this new rule, dog owners also have to obtain a license consisting of a radio collar with an embedded chip. If the dog has no license, the pet parent will be fined a sum of Rs 1000.
The decision didn’t go down well with dog parents. And in no time, tweeps started using #NotWithoutMyDog hashtag to express their opinion against the decision. Also, a change.org petition was started, which has been signed by 13,000 users.
1. How can somebody limit the number of family members?
Hi @BBMPCOMM I can’t believe you would pass such a ridiculous law of limiting the number of dogs per house and not listing stray dogs as legal. Great way to celebrate world environment day by not allowing people to rescue dogs into loving homes. #bbmp #NotWithoutMyDog pic.twitter.com/L6qqWrHB3k

Dear @BBMPCOMM please rework your new laws against pet owners/lovers in #Bangalore It’s not in the best interests of the animals or genuine pet owners. The rest of you please sign this petition. #notwithoutmydog #NotWithoutMyDogs @Cho_Pra https://t.co/mcvq0XU291

#NotWithoutMyDog
Clean our city of the breeder menace first, @BBMPCOMM; Outlaw pet shopping, the purchase of breed puppies; Attack the real problem, the flesh trade of breed pets, instead of running amok over our constitutional rights. @BBMP_MAYOR pic.twitter.com/wbZL0MYyR6— Rekha Saleela Nair (@rekha_s_nair) June 6, 2018
4. Start concentrating on something else
#BBMP – there are other things you need to pay attention to, not curbing how many kids I can have in MY apartment. #notwithoutmydog #sanitizeBBMP #getaholdofyourself #petdaddy #notwithyou #petparent #revamptherules #pathetic pic.twitter.com/WDqevjlFIc

7. People are shocked
Absolutely appalled by this ruling on number of dogs per house. Why not number of children per house then? Have the law makers taken leave of their senses? #notwithoutmydog https://t.co/721hBWJDhs

The Bengaluru civic body was reportedly forced to backtrack after the social media uproar.
The BBMP also put out an approved list of breeds for the residents of Bengaluru. The list is same as the Singapore Housing and Development Board. And it doesn’t include any popular breeds like Cocker Spaniel, Golden Retriever, Beagle or the Indian stray.
