While you cuddle in your oh-so-cozy blankets to beat the chilling winters, a number of animals in the zoo, as well as in a sanctuary have no other option but to look for a spot to keep themselves warm. People usually believe that since elephants are huge, they don’t feel that cold. It’s actually not true. Even though an elephant has a thick skin, they do feel the chill. But sadly, people underestimate this fact just because of their size.
However, these villagers in the neighbouring area of Mumbai are taking cognisance and have come up with a heartwarming gesture. The women in this village have come together to knit huge sweaters and “pyjamas” for these rescued jumbos. Don’t believe us? See this.

Of course, the ladies took months to complete this huge task considering the huge size of these elephants. However, they’ve done a phenomenal job out of it. It must also be noted that these 20 elephants residing in the sanctuary have been rescued from the horrible living conditions. Some of them were trained to beg on the streets of Mumbai. The villagers not only keep them warm but also make sure they get their daily dose of food and protection.

The elephants are now quite friends and gel with those taking care of them. These gigantic animals have suffered abuse from their previous owners. Some of them were beaten with iron rods in order to train them for begging purpose and were fed street food instead of the natural fodder leading to weight gain.

Even though the blankets and jumpers may not be fashionable enough, they are filled with lots of colours, love and warmth. And we are sure the elephants couldn’t be happier to receive their thoughtful winter presents.
