Today we celebrate the tenth anniversary of the Earth Hour. The day has come when we turn off the non-required light for an hour today to show our commitment towards climate change and the environment. An initiative of World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) is celebrated all across the world where the lights at the most famous attractions at different corners of the world, including Empire State Building, Eiffel Tower, are turned off for an hour.
Celebrate at your place:
It is a way to show gratitude towards our planet earth. No special celebration but an hour of co-operation is required at 8:30 pm on this day. Just turn off the non-essential lights at your home, working place or any other place where you have an access to do so.
Celebrate through Social Media:
Apart from switching off the lights, there is another way to show your support and that is through social media. Switch your Facebook profile picture with an Earth Hour frame or change your profile cover picture of Facebook, Twitter, Google+ with the same. The Earth Hour Kit can also be downloaded and it could be promoted in your nearby areas.
The first Earth Hour was celebrated in 2007 in Sydney, Australia, as lights-off day. Later in 2008, it was globally acknowledged by the WWF. Several countries celebrated this day in different ways as well. Like WWF Uganda planted 500,000 trees as to fight gainst deforestation. This initiative not only helped Argentina Senate to pass a bill for 3.4 million-hectare Marine Protected Area but as an Earth Hour initiative, three villages of India were benefitted with solar panel connectivity as they were deprived of electricity. Veteran leaders from different nations like Nelson Mandela, Ban Ki-moon, Kumi Naidoo, Al Gore, and other celebrities such as Miranda Kerr, Stephen Fry, Yoko Ono, and Cate Blanchett have supported this noble cause.
