Researchers at IIT Madras developed India’s first indigenously-designed ‘standing wheelchair’. Called ‘Arise’, it enables people with locomotor disability to shift from a sitting to a standing position without assistance. Though standing wheelchairs in India are imported at a price of Rs 1.5 lakh, Arise will cost only Rs 15,000.
Speaking at the launch of the wheelchair, Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment Thaawarchand Gehlot said,
“In the last five years, I have seen a lot of modern technologies in India and abroad but have not seen such a good standing wheel chair anywhere in the world.”
Sitting for long hours in a wheelchair can lead to positioning problems, respiratory problems and can lead to poor digestion.
