Last week, hundreds of transgender entrepreneurs from across the country came to Mumbai to show their skills at an annual fair in Mumbai that aims to empower the disadvantaged community. The event-“Trans and Hijra Empowerment Mela” saw participation of around 250 transgender entrepreneurs from 15 states. Often banished to the margins of society and forced to beg or engage in prostitution, the event was held to confront the stereotype and to send a message that they can also be self-dependent through dignified modes of income.
