Celebrate World Heritage Day with Twitter and get lost in the beauty around the world!

International Day for Monuments and Sites also known as the World Heritage Day is observed on April 18 every year to encourage communities across the globe to value their cultural heritage and spread awareness about the diversity to protect and conserve it.

On the historic front, observance of the day was first proposed by the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) on April 18, 1982, following which it was approved by the UNESCO General Conference in 1983. The theme for 2017 is ‘Cultural Heritage and Sustainable Tourism’, which is in accord with the United Nations International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development.

While UNESCO is marking the day by conducting tours of sites and museums, Twitterati has found an interesting way to look back at the sites and monuments that form a part of cultural heritage. People across are globe are sharing photographs (both old and new) of the gorgeous sites from around the world and it is making us nostalgic.

From Taj Mahal in Agra to the Sun Temple in Konark, from Brihadeeswara Temple at Thanjavur to Chittor Fort in Chittorgarh, Twitter is flooding with memorabilia of these breathtaking sites.

But that’s not it as you also get to see the glimpses of Scottish heritage, Hawaii Volcanoes and even the stunning Shark Bay dazzling on the international front.

If that doesn’t get you excited this surely will. Check out the images of magnificent monuments here:
