Finance Minister turns poet: Arun Jaitley won applause with his couplets while presenting Budget 2017

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley during his Budget speech won accolades from everyone for the couplets he used between announcements

Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Wednesday presented his fourth union budget before the Parliament. The budget assumed a lot of significance in the wake of the demonetisation move announced by the Narendra Modi government on November 8 last year.

The budget speeches are often riddled with complex financial jargons which sometimes go over our heads. In recent times, the finance ministers have tried to lighten the atmosphere with some poetic couplets which often receive applause from the Benches. Jaitley during his speech recited Hindi poems which left the House awestruck. Here are some of the lines which otherwise go unnoticed amid major announcements on taxations, revenue, excise policy and blah, blah.

And there’s more from the finance minister.

Arun Jaitley was at his poetic best during the budget speech, using the couplets to his advantage.

And last but not the least, Jaitley in his poetic style asked everyone present in Parliament to welcome the new change without hesitation.

The Finance Minister in his budget said that the provisions on excise and customs duties will not turn out into a significant loss or a gain to the exchequer, the fine print suggests a host of items can become either cheaper or dearer. Commodities like LED lamps, solar panels, printed circuit boards for mobiles, micro ATMs, finger-print machines and Iris scanners will potentially become cheaper.

A major announcement in the budget includes political parties receiving donations above Rs 2,000 need to disclose the identity of the donor. Jaitley said that the government had accepted the Election Commission’s recommendations to ensure transparency in the fundings for political parties.

” The maximum amount of cash donation to any political party will be Rs 2,000 from any person,” Jaitley said.
