The month-long election season culminated on Saturday with the announcement of results for the five toughly fought battles in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Goa and Manipur. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) recorded an unprecedented victory in Uttar Pradesh by bagging 312 seats in a 403-seat assembly, decimating the Congress-Samajwadi Party alliance to 54 seats. Struggling to cope up with the loss, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) blamed EVM tampering in polls for its loss. BSP just managed to win 19 seats in the elections.
The BJP also bagged a clear majority in Uttarakhand where the party won 57 seats while the Congress was relegated to a corner by just 11 seats in its kitty.
It was a clear mandate for Punjab where Congress led by Captain Amarinder Singh bagged 76 seats in a 117-member assembly. The SAD-BJP combine managed to get 18 seats while the AAP which many said might win the elections, managed to win on just 20 seats.
The 60-seat Manipur Assembly witnessed a hung assembly where Congress won 26 seats while the BJP bagged 21 seats. Irom Sharmila’s PRJA could not even open its account in Manipur. Goa also witnessed a hung assembly with BJP winning 14 seats and Congress winning seats 19. Despite widespread campaigning, the AAP could not even open its account in the state
