Assembly Elections 2017 Results: Landslide victory for BJP in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand; Congress wins Punjab; hung assembly in Goa, Manipur

In UP, Narendra Modi wants to dislodge Akhilesh Yadav, who is being supported by Rahul Gandhi. Mayawati may be the dark horse. Punjab is a closely fought battle between Captain Amarinder Singh, Parkash Singh Badal and Arvind Kejriwal

The month-long election season culminated on Saturday with the announcement of results for the five toughly fought battles in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Goa and Manipur. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) recorded an unprecedented victory in Uttar Pradesh by bagging 312 seats in a 403-seat assembly, decimating the Congress-Samajwadi Party alliance to 54 seats. Struggling to cope up with the loss, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) blamed EVM tampering in polls for its loss. BSP just managed to win 19 seats in the elections.

The BJP also bagged a clear majority in Uttarakhand where the party won 57 seats while the Congress was relegated to a corner by just 11 seats in its kitty.

It was a clear mandate for Punjab where Congress led by Captain Amarinder Singh bagged 76 seats in a 117-member assembly. The SAD-BJP combine managed to get 18 seats while the AAP which many said might win the elections, managed to win on just 20 seats.

The 60-seat Manipur Assembly witnessed a hung assembly where Congress won 26 seats while the BJP bagged 21 seats. Irom Sharmila’s PRJA could not even open its account in Manipur. Goa also witnessed a hung assembly with BJP winning 14 seats and Congress winning seats 19. Despite widespread campaigning, the AAP could not even open its account in the state

Here are the highlights of the elections for all the five states:

7:45 am:Elaborate security arrangements have been put in place in all the five states where elections were held. Use of mobile phones at counting centres has been banned by the election commission. The trends of the election results are expected by noon

7:10 am: Irom Sharmila who was on a 16-year-fast against the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) formed her own party PRJA and is fighting the 2017 elections. Speaking on Saturday she said: “Muscle, money power openly used by parties.”

## Uttar Pradesh: Counting will take place in 78 centers across 75 districts.

## Uttarakhand: Counting of votes will be held at 15 centers across the state. To avoid any controversy, the counting process will be video-graphed

## Manipur: Counting of votes for 60-member Assembly will be taken up at eleven centers.

## Punjab: Counting of votes will be held at 54 counting centers at 27 locations. 14,000 officials have been deployed for smooth conduct of counting

## Goa: Counting for 19 North Goa constituencies will be held at Panaji and for 21 south Goa constituencies in Madgaon city.
