Irom Sharmila’s People’s Resurgence and Justice Alliance (PRJA) candidate Erendro Leichombam attacked by unknown persons on March 4 in Imphal. Leichombam, was rushed to the hospital. The incident has taken place when voting in Manipur for the first phase elections is underway.
Erendro is the convener of PRJA, a political party he co-founded with Manipur’s Iron lady Irom Sharmila Chanu and few others. The PRJA has fielded only three candidates, including Irom who is taking on the three-time Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh. Erendro is contesting the prestigious Thangmeiband constituency in Imphal.
A former fellow at the World Bank and a former consultant at UNDP, Erendro Leichombam spent the last 10 years of his life in the United States of America.

Erendro is up against two very formidable candidates – the former MLA from the seat Kh.Joy Kishan Singh and Jyotin Waiham. It was just four years ago that Erendro came back to Imphal and ran an advocacy group – Manipur international Centre.
Meanwhile, polling has begun on 38 seats in the first phase of assembly elections in Manipur. The second phase of polling is scheduled to be held on March 8 that will cover remaining 22 seats in the state. 43 per cent voting recorded till 11 am in the first phase.
Heavy security is in place to ensure peaceful conduction of polls in 1,643 stations spreading across Imphal East, Imphal West, Bishnupur and the hill districts of Churachandpur and Kangpokpi. As many as 168 candidates are in fray and their fate will be decided by 11 lakh voters
