Twin blast in Manipur just a day before the elections

Manipur will go for the second phase of assembly polls tomorrow i.e. March 8 and this phase will decide the fate of CM Ibibo Singh and Irom Sharmila

Twin improvised explosive device (IED) blasts shook Manipur today on the eve of final phase of assembly polls.

As per the reports, one jawan and a civilian were injured in the blasts which took place in Ukhrul district. The first explosion took place near Aishi village in the hill district.

It is suspected that the Naga militants triggered the explosion targeting the 31 Assam Rifles personnels at the remote area under Kamjong police station. One rifleman R Vasnet was injured in the blast and was immediately rushed to the nearest hospital.

The second blast exploded near a polling booth in the same district around 4 pm. The explosion took place just a few meters away from the polling stations at Ashang Khullen under Kamjong police station, injuring a civilian who was present there for the election duty.

The second and final phase assembly poll in Manipur will be held tomorrow i.e. on March 8. A total of 98 candidates are contesting in 22 assembly constituencies in the final phase poll spreading across the valley district of Thoubal and hill districts of Chandel, Tamenglong, Ukhrul and Senapati.

According to the Chief Electoral Officer of Manipur office, a total of 19,02,562 voters including 9,28,573 male and 9,73,989 female will cast their vote in the final phase election out of which 45,642 are the new voters and will cast their vote for the first time.

The voting will start from 7am with amid tight security and this final phase poll will decide the fate of several politicians like CM Okram Ibobi Singh, Deputy CM M Gaikhangam, and Human Rights activist Irom Sharmila.
