BJP names Nongthombam Biren Singh as chief ministerial candidate in Manipur

Singh started his political career in 2002 when he was elected to the 8th Manipur Legislative Assembly from his home constituency

Nongthombam Biren Singh is Bharatiya Janata Party’s pick for chief ministership in Manipur. Briefing media in News Delhi, Singh expressed his gratitude towards BJP high command and promised his party will give good governance to Manipur.

“Thank Amit Shah ji,Modi ji & senior leaders. I left Cong due to misgovernance, sure that BJP will give good governance to Manipur,” he told reporters.

Union minister Piyush Goel, who was also present at the event, said, “BJP’s legislature party leader will be N Biren Singh; we will soon move to stake claim to form the government.”

Congress has emerged the single largest party in Manipur after it won 28 seats while the saffron party bagged 21 seats of total 60 assembly seats. However, According to reports, the National People’s Party and the Naga People’s Front have shown their inclination towards the BJP than to the hitherto ruling Congress. Singh won from Heingang constituency defeating Trinamool Congress’ Pangeijam Saratchandra Singh.

Singh started his political career in 2002 when he was elected to the 8th Manipur Legislative Assembly from his home constituency, Heingang, as a Democratic Revolutionary Peoples Party candidate. He made his debut as a minister in the state in 2003 when was appointed minister of state for vigilance.
