Gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari on January 26 joined the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) ahead of Uttar Pradesh elections. The announcement was made by BSP supremo, Mayawati. She further added that Ansari will contest from Mau Sadar seat.
Along with Mukhtar, his brother has also joined the party. While making the announcement, Mayawati asserted that since the charges against the duo have not been proven they were being allowed in the party. While addressing a press conference, Mayawati said that even though there are no crime elements in the BSP, the party gives a chance to people who want to bring development with the help of the party.

It was earlier reported that Ansari was turned down by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav owing to his criminal records. Ansari had been election four times as the MLA from the Mau consistency. He is the prime accused of the Krishnanand murder case. He joined BSP in 2009 but was expelled from the party in 2010 because of his unlawful activities.
After which, he formed his own party with his brother called the Quami Ekta Dal. Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections will be held from February 11 to March 8 in seven phases
