Vidya Balan’s glory days at the Box Office seem to have ended. Our past silver screen outings like Kahaani 2. Shaadi Ke Side Effects, Bobby Jasoos, Hamari Adhuri Kahani, tanked at the Box Office. So obviously, hopes from her latest release Begum Jaan increased but looks like that won’t change fate either for the actress either. Begum Jaan that got mixed reviews from critics and viewers did not enjoy a fantastic second day at the Box Office.
On the first day, Begum Jaan earned Rs 3.94 crore and earned less than that on the second day- Rs 3. 50 crore. At this rate, the first-weekend collection of the movie would come around Rs 10-12 crore. Revealing the numbers of the first day, trade analyst Taran Adarsh said that the business needed to multiply for the movie to have a decent weekend.
Made on a budget of around Rs 45 crore, the movie really needs to pick pace to reach the profitable area.
Directed by Srijit Mukherjee, Begum Jaan is a Hindi remake of the Bengali movie Rajkahini. It traces the story of a brothel owner Begum Jaan who fought against the powerful to save her home from getting demolished. Along with 11 other sex workers of her brothel, Begum Jaan put up a good fight. Set in the Independence era, the film also features Chunky Pandey and Naseeruddin Shah in important roles.
Speaking about her character in the movie, Vidya Balan told InUth.com that she is proud to have took on such a role. She said, “She’s like a tigress on the prowl. No messing with her. If you try messing with her, ‘Tumhare haath, per or jism ka vo kya kehte hain… partison kar dege’. I just think what blew me about Begum Jaan is the fact that she is so powerful. And she is unapologetically powerful. She doesn’t need anyone, any shoulder to lean on. She is like that pillar that can wear any storm.”
