Wading straight into the ongoing conversations of what happened on New Year’s eve in Bengaluru, Bollywood actor Aamir Khan has condemned the unfortunate incident. Speaking at the launch event of Satyamev Jayate‘s Water Cup, Aamir said incidents like these put him to shame.
On New Year’s eve, many women complained of being molested by a group of men in Bengaluru. This entire incident also drew flak for police, who were alleged to be mere spectators, while the entire incident unfolded. On the night of 31 December, several women were groped, grabbed, molested, pinched, and catcalled by hordes of men on Brigade Road and MG Road. Picture from the night showed women in horrified state running from a mob of men.
After the news saw light of day, there are voices being raised about women’s safety in the nation. Aamir’s views on this have been on similar lines and he said the incident saddened and ashamed him. Aamir urged every state government to take stringent steps to keep such incidents in check. He said:
You see in America, if an incident like this happens, within two-three months the guilty person is punished and the case is closed. When this changes, I feel there will be a big change. In today’s age, people who misbehave with girls think ‘nothing will happen to us.’ When such examples come in front of us, that whoever did this is behind bars within 2-3 months, and continuously if we see this, situations will change. There will be fear among people, which is a very important thing.
Apart from Aamir, renowned screenwriter Salim Khan too condemned the incident and called for an intervention from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Opinions from the industry on incidents that made the night of 31 December, a dreaded one, are united. Not only did the celebrities have condemned it, but have also criticized Samajwadi Party MP Azam Khan who blamed Western culture for the incident. Celebs like Farhan Akhtar, Varun Dhawan and Shweta Pandit among others have lashed out at Azmi for making such an insensitive comment.
