Pahlaj Nihalani has been sacked as the chief of Central Board of Film Certification. This news has sent a wave of happiness across the critics of Nihalani who took to Twitter to share the joy. Mr Nihalani has been replaced by Prasoon Joshi, and a large number of users of Twitter are happy about it. Many are of the opinion that this sacking was long overdue and breathed a sigh of relief that the controversial chairperson has been sacked.
It was during Pahlaj’s tenure that CBFC earned the name of ‘sanskari’ board. He demanded cuts in the movie and mercilessly chopped off scenes. From reducing the kissing scene in James Bond flick Spectre by few seconds to giving U/A certificate to The Jungle Book, the board did all under the leadership of Nihalani. Bollywood films also got an ugly treatment with Nihalani demanding cuts for weird reason.
Those of you who have been following news would know how Pahlaj Nihalani’s antics created a huge controversy around the release of Udta Punjab. This year he had issues with many movies including Phillauri, Lipstick Under My Burkha and had a problem with the word intercourse in Jab Harry Met Sejal. CBFC also refused certification to Malayalam movie Ka Bodyscapes saying it gay relationships.
Every time the board took such a decision it came at the receiving end of flak. Social media users did not leave a chance to tell Pahlaj Nihalani the difference between censoring and certification. Now when he has finally been sacked, Twitter users could not help but give their opinion.
