For Baahubali: The Conclusion, blockbuster would be an understatement. The SS Rajamouli directorial has taken the entire world by storm and is inching towards the Rs 1,500 crore mark at the box office. In its 19 days run at the theatres, the Prabhas-starrer is nearing Rs 450 crore mark. On the other hand, Aamir Khan’s Dangal has raked in more than Rs 450 crore at the Chinese Box Office.
Baahubali 2 has proven that a good story with an effective market strategy can do wonders. The second instalment was made at a budget of Rs 250 crore, a lot more expensive than the first part that cost Rs 180 crore. You might be thinking that Baahubali 2 is the most expensive Indian film ever made, but it is not the case.
Recently, there were reports that Mohanlal will be essaying the role of Bhima in the cinematic adaptation of Mahabharata that is estimated to be around Rs 1,000 crore. Allu Aravind, Namit Malhotra and Madhu Mantena are also planning to make Ramayana that is supposed to cost an estimated Rs 500 crore. But it isn’t necessary that the films announced always go on floors. For instance, Bajirao Mastani was slated to begin with Salman Khan, Kareena Kapoor and Rani Mukerji after Sanjay Leela Bhansali finished Devdas. But it was released in 2015 with Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone and Rani Mukerji in lead roles.

Starring Rajinikanth and Akshay Kumar, 2.0 is the sequel to 2010 Tamil blockbuster Enthiran. The first instalment was made at a budget of Rs 132 crore. The second instalment has Akshay Kumar essaying the negative character in the movie. Directed by Shankar, 2.0 was slated to clash with Rohit Shetty’s Golmaal Again and Aamir Khan’s Secret Superstar but the makers have now decided to postpone the release date to 2018.

Occupying the third slot on the list is Padmavati, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s upcoming magnum opus that has been in news for all the wrong reasons. The film is currently in the shooting phase and is expected to hit the theatres towards the end of this year. Its cost is pegged at an estimated Rs 190 crore, which is more than Bajirao Mastani’s budget of Rs 125 crore.
The Khan Triumvirate
Among the three Khans, Aamir’s Dhoom 3 was made at a budget of Rs 175 crore. In fact, it is the fourth highest grossing Indian movie overseas with earnings of around Rs 200 crore. But Shah Rukh Khan has two films with Happy New Year (Rs 150 crore) and Ra.One (Rs 130 crore) making it to the list. Salman’s Bajrangi Bhaijaan was made at a budget of Rs 125 crore and earned Rs 186 crore outside India.

Success not guaranteed
But does pumping in huge amount of money guarantee a blockbuster at the box office? Not really. Baahubali’s success proves that you don’t necessarily need a Rajinikanth or Salman Khan to woo crowd to the theatres. A strong script with perfect casting can do wonders at the ticket counters. But if you think that the films shouldn’t have superstars on board, let us shatter your myth. Made at a budget of Rs 90 crore, Aamir Khan’s Dangal has garnered more than Rs 450 crore at the Chinese Box Office. Overall, it has earned Rs 577 crore overseas, becoming the highest grossing Indian film abroad.
