Vidya Balan starrer Begum Jaan failed to attract footfalls to theatres on the first day. The movie saw a dull opening with about 15-20% occupancy in the earlier shows. The final numbers are here and the movie earned Rs 3.94 crore its opening day. This is obviously not a great number considering how much the buzz the movie had created.
Begum Jaan, is the third movie of the recent weeks to have the protagonist as a woman. Movies like Naam Shabana and Phillauri too had female protagonists. Notably, both the aforementioned movies started on a dull note, they picked up the pace later. The same could also happen with Begum Jaan.
What may work for Begum Jaan, would be the presence of Vidya Balan and an intriguing plot, But with the tenth season of IPL going on, the movie might find it difficult to get cine-goers to watch it.

Set in the Independence era, Begum Jaan is directed by Srijit Mukherjee and is a Hindi remake of theBengali movie Rajkahini. It traces the story of a brothel owner Begum Jaan whose property fell in the line of the partition. How Begum Jaan and 11 women along with her rose to stop their home from getting demolished, formed the crux of the story. As far as the performances of the movie are concerned, it had no dearth of clap-worthing performances.
Apart from Vidya Balan, it was Chunky Pandey who surprised viewers and critics alike. Chunky played a contract killer in the movie. Speaking about how he baged the movie, Chunky Pandey told Indianexpress.com, “Srijit Mukherji called me and said he wants me to do this film. He sent me the trailer of Rajkahini but told me not to watch the film. I called him back and asked, ‘Are you sure you want me?’ He said yes, but I would have to audition. I went on a Sunday, two days after Housefull 3 had released.”
