Actor Urmila Matondkar is making her debut in politics for Congress at the 2019 elections. The actress may contest from Mumbai north but no announcement has been made yet.
Matondkar chose to drop the news by posting a picture with Rahul Gandhi on Twitter, mentioning how her family values had been shaped by the likes of Gandhi, Nehru & Sardar Vallabhai Patel, and it was how therefore no surprise that she had taken this step.
Starting out in Hindi films as a nine-year-old in Shekhar Kapur’s Masoom, Matondkar returned to Hindi films as an adult in Chamatkar alongside Shah Rukh Khan. However, it wasn’t until Ram Gopal Varma’s Rangeela that Matondkar became a pan-India movie star. She did some of her most splendid work in the next decade, where she did films like Kaun, Bhoot, Pyaar Tune Kya Kiya to Ek Hasina Thi. Urmila Matondkar was last seen on the big screen in a song in Abhinay Deo’s Blackmail.
This announcement comes on the heels of another one, where one of Matondkar’s former colleagues, Isha Koppikar pledged her allegiance to the BJP. Where Koppikar will be the head of women’s transport wing for BJP, Matondkar will be contesting to be elected as an MP from the city of Mumbai. The polling for Mumbai’s 6 constituencies will begin on April 29.
