The 64th National Film Awards were conferred by the honourbale President Pranab Mukherjee at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi today. The gala event saw Sonam Kapoor, Akshay Kumar, Atul Kasbekar, Madhur Bhandarkar along with many other popular industry names. The chairperson of the jury, filmmaker Priyardarshan also took the stage to clarify on his decision of choosing names to honour. He said the every decision is subjective and people can always choose to support or criticise it. He said:
“People might appreciate or criticise, but the jury’s decision is final, and has to be appreciated. We have given importance to movies with social issues that show our culture, our beliefs and project India. These are the major points we looked into while deciding the winners.”
The statement has come in the light of the controversy erupted after the jury decided to honour Akshay Kumar as the Best Actor for his performance in Rustom. Akshay, though, took the criticism sportingly and said that he and his family are happy. At the event, the Khiladi of Bollywood was present wit his wife, author and actress Twinkle Khanna and son Aarav. Actress Sonam Kapoor, who received a special mention for her performance in Ram Madhwani directorial, Neerja was also present with the family. In fact, his father and actor Anil Kapoor didn’t seem to hold his excitement when Sonam moved to the stage to receive his award. He stood up and started taking pictures of the actress.

Producer Atul Kasbekar received the award for Neerja in the Best Hindi film category while Mohanlal also got a special mention for his performance in three films — Pulimurugan, Janatha Garage and Munthirivallikal Thalirkkumbol. Ajay Devgn’s Shivaay also got an award in the category of Best Special Effects.
