Dear Mr Amitabh Bachchan
I am nobody to judge your acting style or tell you how good or bad you are while acting in your films. I don’t think anybody is. But after watching you again as Subhash Nagre in Ram Gopal Varma’s Sarkar 3, I couldn’t resist writing to you. So I watched Varma’s latest offering and got the same kind of drama and entertainment that I expected from it. I know RGV is inspired by the Godfather kind of filmmaking and Sarkar series totally validates that. He brings back Subhash Nagre, one of the most memorable characters essayed by you, and he deserves appreciation for that. The low angle camera work, usage of dim lighting, making props as additional characters, an intense background music and a lot of extreme close-ups that’s what makes Sarkar its own kind of dark thriller. But, the soul of the film is you — Mr Bachchan.
You are considered as the god of acting, somebody who is an institution of acting in himself. But, the ecstasy that a viewer or a millennial like me gets while watching you on-screen is something different. I mean I know how great an actor you are. My baba (grandfather) who recently passed away used to tell me that ‘Amitabh Bachchan is not just an actor, he is an era of Hindi cinema.’ I revisit what he told me everytime I see you on-screen and I wanted to thank you for that. There’s another very important thing I wanted to thank you for. You know Mr Bachchan, we, youngsters are often told that we don’t understand work of films and things like ‘Ab kya actors hote hain, humare zamane me hote the Amitabh Bachchan, Dilip Kumar, Rajesh Khanna…‘ I wanted to thank you for the exact thing. All because you do films like Sarkar 3, Piku, and Pink, we get an opportunity to see you on-screen and understand the work of cinema through you. I don’t think the sincerity, honesty, strength and depth we see in your performance can be seen anywhere else.
In Sarkar 3, you started with a long speech. While there were many scenes where you had to say a few heavy dialogues to add drama, there were also the scenes where you just had to emote. And trust me Mr Bachchan, those scenes with no dialogues and just your tight close-ups gave me and a lot of other ‘movie critics’ goosebumps in the theatre. Since I am talking about Sarkar 3, I also want to add that I missed watching Abhishek Bachchan in the film. Each time camera moved to his portrait in the film, I wished for a special twist bringing back Shankar Nagre in the story. You and he together make a lethal acting combo in any film.
Coming to you again in Sarkar 3, I don’t think I am the only one telling you this, but you also make dark look intelligent. And I feel so glad when I realise that you make us, millennials, love something we totally hate doing, which is watching melodramatic movies. You make this same drama look so so engaging and interesting. Like whenever you looked up, straight into the camera and we knew that something is being cooked up in your head, with the music of ‘Govinda, Govinda….’ in the background, I felt myself coming on the edge of the seat. Watching you lip synching to the Ganpati aarti that you have also sung was a fabulous experience altogether. I also like how Hindi cinema has been using Ganpati Vandana to dramatise film plots.
I don’t know what else to say in order to tell you and the entire world how fortunate I feel that I can watch you perform on a big screen like this. I wish you just keep giving us these experiences for years to come, Mr Bachchan.
Congratulations for Sarkar 3.
Signed:
Somebody who have understood cinema by watching you in films
