Happy Birthday Prabhu Deva: Ajay Devgn to Salman Khan, he can truly make anybody dance

Prabhu Deva, the dance maestro who is credited with iconic songs like Urvasi Urvasi and Jalwa, turns 44 today

Prabhu Deva, an accomplished actor, choreographer and filmmaker, turns 44 today. A two-time National Award winner, he is credited with directing some of the best songs in Hindi films. A renowned face in South Indian cinema, Deva has directed some of the highly commercial films in Bollywood, like Wanted, Rowdy Rathore, R Rajkumar and others.

Talking about Wanted, the 2009 action-flick marked the turnaround in fortunes of Salman Khan who has not looked behind since then. A remake of Telugu flick Pokkiri helmed by Deva as well, it became famous for the action sequences and Salman’s punchline ‘ek baar jo maine commitment kar di, to uske baad main khud ki bhi nahi sunta‘ became increasingly popular. But there is a catch. The film earned accolades for the chartbuster songs which brought the best out of Prabhu Deva as a choreographer. Salman Khan, who was not considered a good dancer, tapped his feet under the tutelage of his director and won hearts. The song Jalwa remains one of Khan’s best dance performances till date.

Bollywood has undergone several transformations in terms of dance sequences in films. Prabhu Deva’s arrival did witness a change in the manner how the B-town stars dance. Let us have a look at the transition which Bollywood underwent from 1970s to the present date. For example, sample this dance step by Dharmendra from 1975 film Pratigya.

Oh My God! Although the song Main Jatt Yamla became very popular, but Dharam paaji’s dance was…no comments. We should not blame him alone. Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan is known for the films he acted in, but when it comes to dancing he barely did anything new. Sample this song Apni To Jaise Taise from the 1981 hit Laawaris wherein he completed the entire song in one step.

The 1980s is often considered a tough decade for Bollywood. Several Bollywood stars witnessed their fortunes plummeting. Most of the films did not do well at the box office with the change in mindset of the Indian cinemagoers.  However, the decade witnessed a dancing star in Mithun Chakraborty who stole the limelight with Disco Dancer.

The 90s is considered as a landmark decade in terms of film music. Most of us have grown up in those times and relate to it. There were some path-breaking dance numbers like Saat Samundar Paar, Tu Cheez Badi Hai Mast Mast, Ye Kaali Kaali Aankhen and many more. In 1994 Prabhu Deva shot to limelight with his song Muqabla. He became an overnight sensation and the dance moves became increasingly popular.

The song was from the Tamil film Kadhalan which was dubbed in Hindi as Humse Hai Muqabla. Another song Urvasi was also a hit and established Deva as a dancing star.

What happens when Prabhu Deva joins hands with Madhuri Dixit? It is a peppy dance number like Kay Sera Sera which will compell you to tap feet as well. The song is still very popular among the youth.

We know Hrithik Roshan is one of the best dancers in the Hindi film industry. In 2004 war drama, in Lakshya the actor earned tremendous accolades with the song Main Aisa Kyun Hoon in the Farhan Akhtar directorial. And guess who choreographed it? It’s none other than Prabhu Deva himself.

After a series of duds at the box office, Salman Khan made a stupendous comeback with Wanted. The superstar impressed everyone with his dancing moves in the film.

Similarly, he choreographed Ajay Devgn in 2015 film Action Jackson. Although the film tanked at the box office, Devgn’s dance moves were applauded.

May you continue to enthrall the viewers with your dance moves.
