Sunny Leone’s success in India, to this day, remains to be a mystery to most. While some people choose to see her for what she is today, others can’t help but focus on what she used to be. For a pornstar to make it all the way to Bollywood and be counted among one of its superstars is no easy feat. It is almost unreal that a woman who used to work in adult entertainment gets nation-wide social acceptance in a country where sex is such a taboo. Which begs the question, how did Karenjit Kaur Vohra establish herself as the brand that is Sunny Leone in India? And how did she get an entire nation to fall to her feet and welcome her with open arms?
The answer is quite simple, really. Sunny is a masterful businesswoman who knows how to capitalise on her assets, she herself being the most valuable one. When she started out in the adult film industry with Penthouse magazine, all she had on her mind was money. In her early days, she would fetch quite a bounty out of simply shedding off her clothes. And never, for once, did she feel that she was doing something wrong. Even then, she knew her worth. She would agree to hand out autographs in her brother’s fraternity and settle for no less than 10-15 dollars for a mere signature.

With her career in the industry picking up quickly, she reached out for more and destiny handed her Daniel Weber. She found everything she had ever sought in Daniel, a friend, a confidant, a husband and even, a business manager. Daniel ensured that Sunny must play her cards right which is exactly what he did when she was invited to contest in Indian reality TV series Bigg Boss in 2011. Initially, the immense hatred from India made them decline the offer. However, the show’s overwhelming viewership and money got them to reconsider. It was here that Mahesh Bhatt offered a lead role in his movie Jism 2.

So, in the beginning, we had a pornstar in India and now, we had a pornstar with a regular backstory, who’s in a loving, committed marriage and has been signed on by one of Bollywood’s biggest filmmakers. Thus, the stage was set for Sunny Leone. All she had to do thereafter was work her charm but, she transcended our expectations. Sunny is well aware why people would want to go and watch her films and she is willing to entertain their wishes. She knows that acting is not her strong suit so, films like Ragini MMS 2, Mastizaade and Kuch Kuch Locha Hai mainly banked on her brand value instead. To fill in the gaps, she used social media and public appearances to remedy her image.

If you take a look at how Sunny represents herself on social media, you will notice that it is quite detached from what we see of her on-screen. As much as she loves to say, “If you don’t like me, I actually don’t give a shit if you don’t like me,” Sunny will get you to love her. She presents herself as a sensual diva on-screen, a feature that her fans demand, and on social media, she’s your everyday gal, chilling with friends, doing makeup, posting animal pictures and what not. She projects a version of herself that people don’t get to familiarise themselves with while she’s dancing to cheesy (yet, very catchy) songs like Baby Doll and Pink Lips.

In an interview with Bhupendra Chaubey, Sunny made the difference between her true self and, our perception of her, quite apparent. Like a modest, respectful woman making a living, Sunny shot down every subtle offensive remark thrown at her and enthralled everyone with her wits and charm.

Every step of the way, Sunny has been calculative so as to make the best version of herself that she possibly could. Be it retiring from porn at the apt time or her product line of perfumes, she has made it abundantly clear that she is in it for the long haul. Much like she put it, “Get used to it. Get used to my body. ‘Cause it’s not going anywhere.”
