Raksha Bandhan is celebrated every year to highlight the unique bond between brothers and sisters. Irrespective of indulging in innumerable quarrels, the brother, on this day, vows to protect and take care of his sister. Bollywood films have beautifully portrayed the relationship. A typical Bollywood bhai protects his sister from the villain and often resorts to violence and vengeance in the interest of her respect. But there have been instances as well wherein the brothers were far too protective of their sisters. The antithesis being that the lead hero had to toil throughout the film to win his ladylove, because her brother did not want her to choose any random guy as her life partner.
On Raksha Bandhan, we take a look at 5 films wherein the brothers often proved to be a tough nut to crack.
Arbaaz Khan (Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya): Salman Khan’s 1998 hit film Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya became popular for the song O O Jaane Jaana. Directed by bhaijaan’s youngest brother Sohail Khan, the flick had another sibling, Arbaaz Khan, who essayed the role of a possessive brother to Muskaan (Kajol). He is shown as extremely caring, though lays down tough conditions for his sister’s future husband. Throughout the film, we witness Suraj (Salman) leave no stone upturned to impress his future brother-in-law, whether it be working in the family’s stable or going through intense physical tests. Even though the film’s title suggest that one doesn’t need to fear if in love, our Dabangg lover can’t just shrug off the fear of his lover’s menacing brother!
Arjun Rampal (Housefull): Directed by Sajid Khan, Housefull turned out to be a tremendous commercial success upon its release in 2010. Akshay Kumar played Arush, who is employed in a bar and falls in love with Sandy (Deepika Padukone). However, things don’t turn out to be easy for him as Sandy’s strict brother Major Krishna Rao (Arjun Rampal) is a tough nut to crack. What follows is a dire attempt by Arush to impress Sandy’s khadoos brother who does not think highly of him. In their initial encounter, he grills Sandy’s lover as if he was some sort of a convict. Krishna’s stubbornness can be gauged from the scene towards the end where he is unmoved despite Arush revealing the truth. It takes a lot of pleading and begging from Sandy so that her wily brother approves her choice. It makes us think, why would one sibling want to impose their views and opinion on the other, and especially their choices?

Ajay Devgn (Bol Bachchan): Ajay Devgn, Abhishek Bachchan, Asin and Prachi Desai featured in Rohit Shetty’s blockbuster action comedy flick Bol Bachchan. Devgn played a powerful man Prithviraj Raghuvanshi, who loves speaking in English and hates liars. Abbas Ali (Abhishek) falls in love with Raghuvanshi’s sister Radhika (Prachi Desai) but finds no other option but to assume dual identity of a fictitious character named ‘Abhishek Bachchan’ in order to hide his identity before the don. Whenever Radhika confronted Prithviraj over some issue, she had to listen to the hardships her brother had endured while raising her up. Most importantly, had Prithviraj not met Abbas’s sister Sania who looked similar to his ex, we are unsure whether Rohit Shetty would have been able to end the film on a happy note.
Amitabh Bachchan (Bade Miyan Chote Miyan): Amitabh Bachchan and Govinda played cops Arjun Singh and Pyaare Mohan respectively in David Dhawan’s blockbuster Bade Miyan Chote Miyan. Govinda’s character was flirtatious in comparison to Bachchan’s role of a shy cop who maintained a distance from women. Much to Arjun disapproval, Mohan falls in love with his sister Seema. The protective brother leaves no stone upturned to keep Mohan away from Seema but in the end, has no option but to give in. Arjun Singh, who himself falls to the charm of Neha (Ramya Krishnan), leaves his home on the pretext of going on an assignment but his plan was to spy upon Pyaare Mohan and Seema.

Akshay Kumar (Main Khiladi Tu Anari): On a mission to bring the killers of his elder brother to justice, ruthless cop Karan Joglekar (Akshay Kumar) is unwelcoming of actor Deepak Kumar (Saif Ali Khan), who decides to study his behaviour so that he can play the role of a cop in his next film. While assisting his ‘subject’ on dangerous raids at villain Goli (Shakti Kapoor)’s hideouts, Deepak falls in love with Karan’s sister Shivangi (Rageshwari). Despite asserting his disapproval of the relationship, the cop has no option but to accept Deepak as his brother-in-law. It becomes possible because Deepak risks everything to coerce Karan into proposing Basanti (Shilpa Shetty) for marriage. We agree that the distraught cop wanted to avenge the murder of his and Shivangi’s elder brother, but shouldn’t family and work issues be kept separate?
