Released in over 1400 screens across the country amidst much fanfare, the first key Bollywood release of the year, OK Jaanu — starring Aditya Roy Kapur and Shraddha Kapoor, has struck the right chords in the audience’s hearts. Despite having stiff competition with Deepika Padukone’s xXx: Return of Xander Cage and Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s Haraamkhor, Shaad Ali’s romantic comedy managed a decent Rs 4.08 crore on the first day of the Box Office collection.
The movie is a remake of Mani Ratnam’s Tamil romantic flick, OK Kanmani. It failed to woo the critics who didn’t quite like the idea of a total copy-paste script. However, people who didn’t have the chance to watch the earlier version applauded the on-screen chemistry of Aashiqui 2 actors Shraddha and Adi, and of course—the youthful music of AR Rahman.
The critically acclaimed Haraamkhor, featuring Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Shweta Tripathi, also hit the theatres this week. Flourished under the direction of Shlok Sharma, the movie had to wait nearly four years for its release since the Certification Board wasn’t convinced enough that the Indian audience was ready to watch something as sensitive as this.
The film, which opened on a low note with 5-10% occupancy across the country, is a low budget non-commercial movie. However, it could give a tough time to OK Jaanu for its simple reason that people would connect themselves to the ‘bold’ content of a married professor having an illicit affair with his student.

But will that be enough? I think not. Though the massive fanbase of Nawazuddin Siddiqui will cramp the theatres, the very controversial subject will keep the families at bay resulting in a not-so-much collection at the Box Office.
On the day of its release, OK Jaanu witnessed 25% occupancy in the screens across the country, with the decent increase in the evening shows. In the domestic Box Office, the movie has already raked in Rs 4.08 crore and the results are expected to grow even more over the weekend.

Meanwhile, Aamir Khan’s Dangal has been weaving magic for four straight weeks and is just Rs 11.7 crores short of earning an imposing Rs 200 crore overseas. The Friday Box Office collection of the wrestling movie earned them Rs 1.94 crore, with business expecting to show an upward trend on Saturday and Sunday.
