In series of tweets, 'Tanu Weds Manu' lyricist reveals why he lost faith in film awards

When Chammak Challo from Ra.One got nominated for a 'prestigious' award but Raj Shekhar's songs in Tanu Weds Manu didn't, he finally understood why

As it turns out, it’s not just Kangana Ranaut who thinks Bollywood award shows have become a joke. By giving the Best Film Award to Golmaal Again and ignoring a critically-acclaimed film like Newton at the recently-held Zee Cine Awards, the industry has made its priorities clear. And now a series of tweets from lyricist Raj Shekhar, who has penned lyrics for movies like Tanu Weds Manu, Tanu Weds Manu Returns and Qarib Qarib Singlle, have further strengthened the claims.

Shekhar shared on Twitter how he was excited about his first movie Tanu Weds Manu. He was also hopeful about getting nominated for penning the songs which got him widespread appreciation. But that didn’t happen. He tweeted:

In his next tweet, Shekhar expressed he thought songs in 7 Khoon Maaf, Rockstar and Zindagi Naa Milegi Dobara deserved getting nominated. But on seeing Chammak Challo from Ra.One receiving a nomination, Shekhar understood how the industry functioned. He wrote:

There are high chances Raj Shekhar was referring to Filmfare Awards. The nominations of the 2012 Filmfare Awards for Best Lyricist were:

Irshad Kamil – Nadaan Parindey from Rockstar
GulzarDarling from 7 Khoon Maaf
Irshad Kamil – Sadda Haq from Rockstar
Javed Akhtar – Senorita from Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara
Vishal Dadlani and Niranjan Iyengar – Chammak Challo from Ra.One

Eventually, Nadaan Parindey won and Irshad Kamil bagged the award.

In a podcast for Saavn, Kangana Ranaut also called out the awards a sham and recalled an incident when she was not honoured simply because she was stuck in traffic. She said,

I was supposed to receive the award for supporting cast for Life In A Metro. I got stuck in traffic. I started getting calls asking ‘where are you’. The hysteria and panic that I experienced, I didn’t make it and Soha (Ali Khan) got it for Rang De Basanti.

Referring to Filmfare Awards, Kangana then added,

Deepika Padukone got an award for Happy New Year. And they didn’t give me an award for Queen as I didn’t show up. The next year they made sure I didn’t get the Best Actress award for Tanu Weds Manu Returns and later I got the National Award. Then they got trolled.

Kangana’s statements led to Filmfare’s editor Jitesh Pillai’s take to Twitter to defend the move.

Well, Pillai may have tried to defend him and the publication but the writing on the wall is clear: Bollywood film Awards are a joke.
