Shahid Kapoor and Alia Bhatt’s film Udta Punjab was surrounded by controversies ever since its release. Though the movie was a huge success, but its struggle with the censor board was nothing less than a war. While the CBFC wanted to cut a large number of scenes in Udta Punjab, claiming obscenity and defamation, the filmmaker had approached the courts, which ruled in his favor. The film was finally passed with one cut.
Helmed by Abhishek Chaubey, the film has had its ups and downs in the past one year and faced a tough time to be released on TV. But it seems like the CBFC’s television technical committee has finally approved the film for TV audience with just 3 cuts.
In an interview with Mumbai Mirror, an elated Abhishek told that he is aware of the fact that a majority of people in India watch TV and that the content of his film is not apt for children, so this 3-minute cut is completely acceptable. He further added: ”I made a few suggestions which were completely from an aesthetic point of view because we had to follow the guidelines. And my suggestions were accepted.”
The film’s story delves into the drug problem that the youth in Punjab is facing, and this has been told through actors Shahid, a youth icon and music star who remains high on drugs; Alia, a Bihari woman who falls in the trap of drug peddlers; Kareena, a doctor on a mission to break the drug nexus in the state; and Diljit, a police officer who dares to take on the system after his brother falls victim to the drug menace. So finally, we will get to see Udta Punjab on April 30 at 12 PM on &Pictures.
