The movie title Lipstick Under My Burkha has created waves, made way for conversation and started debates around what it is like to be a woman in free India. This Alankrita Shrivastava directorial featuring Konkona Sensharma, Ratna Pathak Shah, Aahana Kumra, Plabita Borthakur with Vikrant Massey, was denied certification by the Central Board of Film Certification. The reason given to the makers was that this movie was ‘lady-oriented’ and ‘audio pornography’. What followed next was a battle between the makers and CBFC, led by Pahlaj Nihalani, the former emerging victorious later.
Ekta Kapoor’s Alt Entertainment took it upon itself to present the movie and the trailer of the movie released a short while ago. The makers have left no stone unturned in taking a dig at the censor board in the trailer. By using the words, ‘The movie they don’t want you to see’, the makers have struck the bull’s eye.
If one thought that giving it back to the board was all the movie’s trailer, you are mistaken. The trailer of the movie is raunchy, to say the least. The tale of four women, forced to live by societal norms grabs attention from the first frame. The clip talks about the life of an 18-year-old burkha-clad-college girl who seeks freedom. The second life in focus is that of a beautician who wants to escape the claustrophobia of her small town. The third one is a housewife with three children who wish for a different life. The fourth lady in context is a 55-year-old woman who roots for a sexual reawakening.
The trailer removes all the curtains and brings to attention what happens behind closed doors. The actors too have left all their inhibitions and given bold performances, something which will definitely awe critics. Well, the makers have confronted the ‘sanskaari’ board in this trailer and anything less than this would have made cine buffs who supported the movie sad.
Lipstick Under My Burkha is slated for a release on July 21.
