A little more than a month ago, Mahira Khan found herself at the receiving end of unwarranted hatred after her pictures with Ranbir Kapoor went viral. Clicked on the streets of New York, Mahira and Ranbir were spotted taking a smoke break, which gave haters a reason to slut-shame her. Not that misogyny follows any logic.
Mahira has now revealed the entire controversy shattered her and she understood how her pictures would have disappointed many.
In an interview with a Pakistani web magazine Somethinghaute.com, Mahira said the incessant trolling left her broken. Saying she is an otherwise strong girl, but couldn’t come to terms to react on the matter. She said,
I’d be lying if I said that I decided right off the bat that I wouldn’t respond to this controversy. And I’m a very strong woman but when all of this happened, I was completely shattered and broken.

Mahira had even deactivated her social media account but came back on the platforms because of her movie Power Di Game. When she rejoined the platform, she thought it would serve as a response to trolls. However, Mahira said not all criticism which she garnered was driven by hate, some of it was plain disappointment. She said,
To be honest, I understand where all the criticism came from and it didn’t come from a place of hate. I’m not talking about the trolls but those who were genuinely disappointed to see those pictures. It’s the same disappointment that my nani or my mamoo would have felt seeing that. So even now when I meet an older lady who says that she didn’t like the pictures, I’m quick to apologize.

When asked if she considered herself a perfect role model, Mahira answered with a yes. The Raees actress went on to say at the end of the day she was a human being capable of making mistakes. Mahira added the kind of support she got on social media proves things are changing in Pakistan and there was a ray of hope. She added,
I was really happy to see that there were so many people who stood up for me. It goes to show that the narrative in Pakistan is changing, and if nothing else, I’m happy to have been part of that narrative.
Talking about the entire outrage, Mahira had earlier said she was allowed to do whatever she wants to. She had said it was pretty normal for a guy and girl to hang out together and the entire ruckus around it was unnecessary. Unlike her first response, this shows that the actress is mature enough to acknowledge the place her critics are coming from, without compromising on her own agency.
