Dobara – See You Evil Movie Review: Huma Qureshi and Saqib Saleem’s spooky tale breaks free of cliches

Dobara - See You Evil Movie Review: Starring Huma Qureshi and Saqib Saleem, the film is an official remake of Hollywood hit Oculus

Finally, a Hindi horror film that moves ahead of the done and dusted cliches and still manages to send chills down one’s spine. Dobara: See You Evil, starring the real life brother-sister duo of Huma Qureshi and Saqib Saleem, is an official remake of Hollywood hit Oculus. Usually, when Bollywood directors adapt a different language film, they try and weave the story into the typical Hindi film settings that the audience are used to seeing. Sometimes it may work, but in this genre, it is exhausting to see the same scenes play out again and again. However, Dobara is not going to disappoint you in that department.

The story revolves around Kabir Alex Merchant and her sister Natasha Alex Merchant played by Saqib and Huma respectively. Both of them have had an extremely disturbing childhood at the end of which Kabir was convicted of shooting his father and Natasha couldn’t wrap her head around how her family fell apart.

Based in London, the film has Kabir and Natasha uniting after almost a decade to prove a point. Natasha is adamant to the fact that there was a paranormal force behind the fragmentation of their family. The first half of the film walks us through their childhood and how it gradually began to scatter when their father Alex Merchant, played by Adil Hussain, brings home a haunted mirror.

Since the arrival of the mirror, there have been some unusual activities in the house, but the events took a turn for worse when their father resorted to ending his wife’s life. And to avenge his mother’s life, Kabir shoots his father after which he is handed over to a mental asylum.

On the other hand, Natasha believes that it was the evil force in the mirror that has propelled his father and brother to commit such heinous crimes. The rest of the film traces Natasha’s attempt to prove this to Kabir.

Huma, last seen in Jolly LLB 2, has certainly packed a punch this time. The belief in her eyes and her desperation to prove the facts right moves you to such an extent that you begin to question her sanity. Her reel and real life brother Saqib has just about managed to justify his part. The character was an extremely complex one for him and he has done his best to not disappoint us. However, it is Adil Hussain who stands tall with his performance in this film. His strong screen presence coupled with some evil antics is sure to keep you on the edge of your seat.

What’s Hot:
The novel treatment of the film by director Prawaal Raman is something that has not been seen in Bollywood horror films earlier. Despite being scary and spooky in bits and parts, Dobara also plays with your mind and leaves a psychological impact.

What’s Not:
The first half of the film do not have enough meat that a horror film should have. Also, the chemistry between Huma and Saqib do not seem to strike a chord. Music fails to add any momentum to the story.
