Oscars have proved to be lucky for us, not only because music maestro AR Rahman made it to the list of Original Score category, but also because two of the Bollywood films have also made it to the Oscars.
Sushant Singh’s MS Dhoni: The Untold Story and Randeep Hooda’s Sarbjit are named in the long list of 336 feature films eligible for the Oscars. The nominations for which will be announced on January 24, 2017. And as per the eligibility criteria mentioned on the official website of Academy Awards:
To be eligible for 89th Academy Awards consideration, feature films must open in a commercial motion picture theater in Los Angeles County by midnight, December 31, and begin a minimum run of seven consecutive days. And under Academy rules, a feature-length motion picture must have a running time of more than 40 minutes and must have been exhibited theatrically on 35mm or 70mm film, or in a qualifying digital format.
Sarbjit is based on the real-life story of Sarabjit Singh, an Indian farmer who languished in a Pakistani jail for 23 years, while his sister Dalbir Kaur fought relentlessly for her brother’s justice. Directed by Neeraj Pandey, MS Dhoni is a biopic on India’s limited-overs Captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni and his cricket journey.

Surprisingly, good films like Sultan and Pink couldn’t even make it to the long list. Apart from these two, renowned Indo-American filmmaker Mira Nair’s directorial venture Queen of Katwe is also part of the list. The film is based on real-life events and chronicles the inspiring story of an underdog from the streets of rural Uganda.

This surely is a great news for us and we wish that both the films make it to the final nominations. The grand event will take place on February 26 at the Dolby Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center in Hollywood.
