NFAI starts film club for children; to begin with screening of Satyajit Ray’s Sonar Kella

Satyajit Ray's film Sonar Kella will be screened at a film's club for children. The movie won many accolades of including National Film Awards

Sonar Kella, the critically acclaimed movie of ace director Satyajit Ray will be screened at a children’s movie club on 25 February in Pune. The club has been started by National Film Archive Of India (NFAI) along with Arbhaat Films, said reports in the media. The director of the organisation Dr Prakash Magdum told said they were delighted over such an initiative and have invited many schools to participate in it.

As a part of the initiative, Sonar Kella will be shown to children from 9-16 years.

Filmmaker Umesh Kulkarni, who is the founder of Arbhaat films reportedly said, children should be shown great films as it will help in moulding their personality.

“The NFAI is the hub for all significant film activities in the country and we are excited and happy to be associated with them in this initiative,” Mr Kulkarni added.

Screening of films for children will begin this week and the process will continue every month. Through this practice, the initiative intends to promote ‘healthy film culture’ and ‘sensitise children to the wonders and importance of cinema’.

The 1974 release Sonar Kella featured Soumitra Chatterjee as Feluda, the famous fictional detective. The film revolves around Mukul, a six-year-old boy. Mukul claimed he remembered things from his previous birth and went on to explore the possibilities with a parapsychologist. When Mukul’s father got a hint about his son’s inclinations, he hired a private detective to ensure the child’s safety.

Sonar Kella earned five National Awards including Best Director for Satyajit Ray and Child Artiste for Kushal Chakraborty and Best Feature Film in Bengali.
