Rani Mukerji’s upcoming movie, Hichki‘s title track, Oye Hichki, is out and not only is it lively, it’s a subtle reminder for the society to change its skewed perspective and hypocrisy. Yash Raj Films shared the track on social media with a message that might be difficult to swallow for some: ‘यह पानी से जाने वाली हिचकी नहीं है, समझ से जायेगी’ (This hiccup will not subside by drinking water, it will go once you inculcate an understanding):

The song drops major truthbombs about the society, exposing its blatant hypocrisy on issues of physical handicap, skin colour, misogyny, environmental pollution and that control-freak attitude every choice from life-partner to career to a person’s right to express themselves. The lyrics of the song, written by Jaideep Sahni, the music by Jasleen Royal and the voice of Harshdeep Kaur resonate with the personal struggles of every young adult navigating the rough streets of society. The song has foot-tapping music, and lyrics that make you pause.
The song touches a nerve with words like ‘dham se na thamni, rangni rangni/ roke se na rukni, rangni rangni/ zidd ki chunariya rangni, rang rang ke saaji, saaji ye hichki’. The lyrics capture the essence of a film that’s touted to be about accepting one’s shortcomings, and turning them into one’s strength.
With the movie releasing on March 23, Rani Mukerji is making a comeback four years after Mardaani (2014). Directed by Siddharth P Malhotra, Hichki is about the lesser-known Tourette’s syndrome.
