In a fresh setback for filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali, a huge outdoor set of his historic period drama Padmavati in Kolhapur was reduced to ashes after two dozen unidentified persons torched it early on Wednesday. Since the fire brigade could not reach the disaster site quickly after the flames were noticed at 1 a.m., villagers helped douse the fire and helped to move the people and animals, mostly horses, from the site to safety.
Detailed costumes, especially for junior artistes, were reduced to ashes. The makers in their police complaint revealed that they have to suffer a loss of nearly Rs 4 crore. The incident occurred at the picturesque Masaipathar area, around 15 km on the outskirts of Panhala town in Kolhapur district.
Though it is not clear when the shooting will resume, Padmavati is slated for a mid-November release this year.
This is the second time that Bhansali has faced the ire of certain groups over the film’s shooting. On January 27, Bhansali was slapped, roughed up and his film set vandalised by Karni Sena activists in Jaipur’s Jaigarh Fort for alleged distortions in the film’s script.
The entire film industry has come out in support of Sanjay Leela Bhansali and expressed their anger over the whole issue. From Shahid Kapoor, Anushka Sharma to filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma, every B-Town celeb is shocked to see such violence.
An official statement was also issued by SLB’s spokesperson, in which all the details are mentioned. Here’s what the statement read:
During a press conference of her upcoming film Phillauri, when Anushka was asked about the whole issue, the actress immediately said that it is not acceptable. She further added: No sensible person, not just in the film industry, can damage somebody’s personal properties.
