Last year’s release Pink gave us the phrase which will always be remembered- No means no! This Amitabh Bachchan, Tapsee Pannu, Kriti Kulhari, Andrea Tariang and Angad Bedi starrer asked all the right questions about women safety. Director Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury did a brilliant job in bringing to the silver screen something which was relatable. But do you know, Pink, which turned one year old today, wasn’t supposed to end as it did? Apparently, the makers had thought to end the movie with the criminal boys walking out free, just like it happens in most real-life cases.
This piece of information is, of course, shocking but not untrue. This has been revealed in the book – PINK The Inside Story. Just before the shooting of this award-winning film started, the team met once for the final reading session. They came to a consensus that Pink would not have a cliched Bollywood ending where Amitabh Bachchan comes and saves the three girls from the rigorous sentence. Even Shoojit Sircar was convinced with the idea of Rajvir (played by Angad Bedi) and his friends walking away free. The main idea behind this was to make viewers introspect about the things which happen in daily life.
Before the shooting began, writer Ritesh Shah showed the draft to his wife Saba. He had said Shoojit wanted a women perspective to the story and as it happens, Saba was not convinced by the end. Saba told Shoojit he would be making a big mistake if he showed that the boys weren’t getting punished. According to Saba, the entire film would give a sense of elation to women, but if the ending wouldn’t change, they would be put off from the story.

The entire crew seemed fine with the original ending where the boys walk free and they all agreed that it was nicely written. Shoojit also seemed convinced with this. But, on the day of shoot Shoojit changed the ending. He wanted the judgment to be open but against the perpetrators. He asked the team to not make it a big victory but make it a positive one.

Well, if Pink would not have ended the way it did, we wonder if viewers would have liked the movie so much.
