For Masaba Gupta, the journey has never been easy. As the daughter of Neena Gupta and Sir Vivian Richards, she fought a lot of battles — particularly, racism and objectification. With every blow the misogynistic, racist society threw at her, she emerged stronger. The ace-designer sat down for a conversation with close friend Sonam Kapoor on Film Companion’s show Tape Cast and by the end of it we got a fair idea about her life.
Not long ago, Masaba Gupta stood against trolls who somehow thought it was okay to comment on her parentage. Why? Because she supported the ban against firecrackers. Being the woman of substance that she is, Gupta did not bow down to these jobless trolls and gave them a befitting reply. In this conversation as well, Masaba Gupta spoke with great candour about her life and we cannot help but appreciate it.
On racism
The daughter of Neena Gupta and West Indies cricketer got her first taste of racism in school. Her classmates had many preconceived notions about her, but now Gupta feels kids really don’t know what they are speaking.
On objectification
Masaba Gupta also spoke about the harassment she faced in school, which goes on to prove that we need to teach our kids that being sensitive and considerate never hurt anyone.
On marriage
Though Neena Gupta and Vivian Richards never got married, their decision did not have any effect on Masaba’s idea of marriage.
On the advice Neena Gupta gave her
Raising a child on single-handedly was difficult for Neena Gupta, and so she, obviously, advised her daughter against it.
