Sanjay Leela Bhansali has a distinct style of filmmaking. He sees everything as grander than grand and seeks to create an experience, not just a film. The trailer of his upcoming film — Padmavati is yet another example of the same. It’s astounding, backed by magnificent music and beauty in every frame. Intense chemistry between Deepika Padukone and Shahid Kapoor, lethal battle scenes, splendour of Rajputana culture and a menacing Ranveer Singh — you resist even a tiny blink of your eye while watching Padmavati’s trailer.
Apart from raising our expectations from Bhansali, the trailer has also shown us something that the filmmaker hasn’t done before. It has introduced us to the first ever full-fledged villain created by SLB on screen. Ranveer’s Alauddin Khilji in Padmavati’s trailer seems extremely ferocious, like a tiger who’s on a never-ending prowl. Deepika as Rani Padmavati, the courageous queen of Chittor and Shahid as Raja Rawal Ratan Singh, the brave ruler are equally grand. But, Ranveer, as ruthless Alauddin Khilji, arguably seems to have elevated Padmavati’s stature. There is a sudden thaw in the lovely background music as soon as Alauddin enters the screen.
There’s constant darkness in the background with only his face being lit up.
The scar on his face, the heavily kohled eyes, and a vulture-like gait, Alauddin seems to have been crafted to invoke utmost hatred and an undeniable level of disgust.

There’s stark venom in his eyes and with every succeeding expression, Ranveer becomes more and more dreadful and hateful in the trailer.
He plays with fire, eats raw flesh and takes pleasure in pain. His very gaze seems to have been designed out of myriads nightmares combined.
Even with no dialogue in the three minutes nine seconds trailer, Singh’s Khilji stands out like the most unforgettably horrendous thing that happens once in a lifetime but lives with you forever.
Watch the trailer again.
