Richa Chadha Fires Back After Receiving Death, Rape Threats By Right-Wing Troll

Richa Chadha is one of those few actors in Bollywood who refuses to sit down and play all ‘politically correct’. Be it issues concerning the film industry or national politics, the 31-year-old never minces her words. In a tweet on Wednesday, Chadha condemned a ‘Hindu’ troll, who threatened her with rape and murder, mere days after her remarks against Hindutva.

On May 5, Chadha had tweeted, “Yes, Hinduism is indeed in danger in India. Hinduism faces a threat from Hindutva supporters. Save your religion and get rid of these supporters of Hindutva. Issued in public interest.” The tweet was posted amid tumult at the Aligarh Muslim University in Uttar Pradesh, where the Hindutva brigade had created a ruckus, allegedly over a portrait of Pakistan’s founder Muhammad Ali Jinnah.

Soon after Chadha shared the tweet, several users on Twitter condemned the actress, as it often happens when one dares to voice an opinion on the internet. However, one of the haters went ahead and threatened the actress with rape and murder.

At first, Chadha chose not to engage with the trolls, but the intensity of hate speech in these tweets perhaps made it too hard to be ignored. Countering the “targeted abuse”, the actor flagged the threats to Twitter.

Shockingly, however, Chadha says that Twitter found “no violation” of its community standards “within context.”

So, while Twitter is yet to take action (if at all), actor Swara Bhaskar and film-maker Pooja Bhatt have extended their support for Chadha. Tweeting out more screenshots of inflammatory comments made about Chadha, the Veere Di Wedding actress, urged the social networking platform to “block these accounts that clearly violate community standards.”

You must report this. Twitter needs to take responsibility for this. They cannot provide a platform to people who openly threaten to rape and maim women.
