Sonu Nigam has written, in a series of tweets, that he would quit the micro-blogging website Twitter, in support of fellow singer Abhijeet Bhattacharya. The latter’s Twitter account was suspended yesterday after he posted derogatory tweets about Shehla Rashid. In a response to a tweet by Shehla, Abhijeet went overboard with his abusive and sexist tweets against her, following which the singer’s Twitter account was suspended. Last year, Abhijeet had similarly abused journalist Swati Chaturvedi in the vilest of words possible.
But, this did not go down well with Sonu Nigam. He called Abhijeet’s suspension an example of double standards of the micro-blogging website. He asked why Shehla’s account not suspended when she spoke about BJP’s sex racket? He asked why her tweet was not seen as a proactive one?
Citing the example of his Azaan controversy, Sonu wrote that he would not want to be a part of such a platform where pseudo-nationalists turn a blind eye to the unprecedented slap he gave to the Muslim cleric who issued a fatwa against him.
The singer also spoke about the Paresh Rawal controversy where he supported the veteran actor’s take on Arundhati Roy. He said just like Arundhati has the right to express her opinion on the Kashmir issue, billions of Indians are allowed to feel let down by her comments. Slamming the media, Sonu said the media has learned history from traitors.

Clearing his stand on why he chose to quit Twitter, Sonu wrote he would not like to be a part of something where he is deemed an anti-national in someone’s mind. The singer said he did not belong to any religion and thought humanity was the only thing that mattered.
