Stanley Ka Dabba director Amole Gupte terms children’s participation in reality shows inhuman, calls for ban

Amole Gupte, who wrote critically acclaimed film Taare Zameen Par and directed films based on children, has expressed concerns about the kids participating in reality shows. He said that simply blaming parents for their wards’ plight is not enough. They are themselves the victim of the system that promotes unrealistic ambitions.

Gupte, who was also the chairperson of Children’s Film Society, shared the miserable condition of children who participate in these reality shows. “They are brought from distant places to Mumbai and lodged in cheap hotels with their parents. They are forced to travel long distances for rehearsals. They are forced to shoot for endless hours in non-AC rooms,” he said.

Adding further, Gupte shared an incident from a reality show. “A little blind boy had made it to the finals of a reality show. He was practising throughout the day in gruelling conditions. When he went to record the song at 1’o clock in the night, he had lost his voice,” he told a leading news website.

Gupte, who directed his son Partho in Stanley Ka Dabba, said that the government needs to enforce laws for stopping the children from working for long hours.”During my stint as the chairperson of Children’s Film Society, I pushed for the law stopping the kids from shooting for more than five hours for TV or films. The rule is now in place,” the filmmaker said.
