Anushka Sharma dropped the teaser of Pari yesterday, and it sure looks scary. Reportedly, Sharma’s character in the film is possessed and the teaser hints at it being a ‘bloody’ movie. An A-lister Anushka Sharma playing the lead in a horror movie ought to definitely encourage others to follow suit.
It won’t be wrong to say Bollywood is in dire need of good horror movies. The movies which we have seen in the recent past made us LOL, rather than quake in our boots. The last movie which didn’t rip apart the genre was Raaz, and that was 16 years ago. Directed by Vikram Bhatt, Raaz revolved around a married couple, and how an extra-marital affair of the husband (Dino Morea) came back to haunt the two.
After Raaz’s release in 2002, it was turned into a series with Raaz: The Mystery Continues (2009) and Raaz 3 (2013), but neither of them were even a mite scary.

Take a look at the garbage we’ve seen in the name of horror films in the past:
1920 (2008):
A married couple moves to a secluded house, and the wife is haunted by a ghost. The film was full of cliches and awkward VFX.
Ragini MMS (2011):
A couple’s romantic weekend turned topsy-turvy when they realised they weren’t alone. This film h, however,as more about sex, than spirits.
13 B (2009):
A family moves to a flat and gets addicted to a daily soap, realising later that the serial showed their story in gory details. The obvious twists and turns made this a boring watch.

Vaastu Shastra (2004):
The kid in the house made ‘imaginary’ friends and mother Sushmita Sen didn’t believe her. This could have made for a good ‘tips of parenting’ movie.
Shaapit (2010):
Superstitions, curses, and way too much fog machine, the eerie treatment of the movie was hilarious to say the least.
We have seen enough of haunted, deserted houses, pointless screams and badly executed scary scenes and hope Pari breaks the norm.
