Will set screens ablaze if Padmavat releases, says Rajput outfit leader

Despite Sanjay Leela Bhansali's clarifications, his film has been criticised for distorting facts

Prasoon Joshi chaired Central Board Of Film Certification (CBFC) may soon give Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmavat(i) a U/A certificate, but its problems seem far from over. A political fringe outfit, Rajput Karni Sena (RRKS) has called for a nationwide ban on the movie and threatened to take ‘law into their own hands’ if it releases. According to the outfit, the movie glorifies the ‘barbarian’, Delhi Sultanate ruler Alauddin Khilji.

The Gujarat leader of the outfit – which is a splinter group of the Rajput Karni Sena – Raj Shekhawat told a daily:

“It is unfortunate that the censor board has decided to give the film a U/A certificate with only five changes. We will not accept this. We want a total ban on the film, which glorifies the barbarian invader, Alauddin Khilji. Just like Gujarat and some other states, we want the Centre to stop its release in the other parts of the country as well.”

Shekhawat issued open threats saying the group would not hesitate in setting screens ablaze. The leader argued the entire movie distorted facts and making few changes won’t rectify anything. He argued that a panel including Mewar royal’s family Maharaja Arvind Singh said the movie distorted historical facts, which is why they cannot allow the film to release. He said:

“Even then, the censor board has taken such a decision. We will not sit quiet if the film is released”

Starring Deepika Padukone as Rani Padmini, Shahid Kapoor as Raja Rawal Ratan Singh and Ranveer Singh as Alauddin Khilji, Padmavati found itself caught in a cobweb of controversies. Many right-wing outfits alleged the movie distorted facts, and asked the movie to be banned. The CBFC too was miffed with Bhansali for holding a special screening for select media personalities. The release of the magnum opus was initially deferred from December 1.

On December 30, the CBFC announced the movie would be given U/A certificate after few modifications and suggested the title to be changed to Padmavat, the name of Malik Muhammad Jayasi’s epic poem. The board also said the makers would need to run a disclaimer making it clear the movie doesn’t glorify the practice of Sati. After the final material would be submitted, the movie would be allowed release.

It is now left to be seen when this highly controversial and anticipated movie will release.
