Secret Superstar is the story Zaira Wasim as Insia, a young girl who wants to become a professional singer, but struggles against an authoritarian, abusive father. It is also the story of a desi woman, raised and bred in a sociaty that taught her to adjust, and to accept a husband who is emotionally and physically abusive. Secret Superstar is a liberating tale of two women finding their feet in a world that teaches them dependency. The movie stars Meher Vij and Raj Arun as Zaira’s parents, and has Aamir Khan in a guest appearance as a music director.
Chinese film analyst, Gavin Feng posted a tweet saying “China Box Office: Secret Superstar become the 1st ¥700M plus import movie in 2018. It seems that no one could threaten its position of (sic) the best selling import in 2018 before Pacific Rim 2”.
Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim was declared a hit in China when it arrived in the theatres in 2013, and its sequel Pacific Rim 2 or Pacific Rim Uprising is one of the most anticipated international movies of 2018 in China.
