Deadpool Oscar Snub: It is time the Academy Awards honoured superhero films

Agitated fans have chosen to vent their frustrations with Deadpool's Academy Award snub at Suicide Squad's nomination.

Nominations for the 89th Academy Awards were announced yesterday and the response it got was bittersweet. While people are rejoicing over La La Land‘s groundbreaking 14 nominations, others are upset that Marvel’s Deadpool got snubbed at the Oscars. While the film’s mention in the Best Picture category is debatable, Ryan Reynolds was more than deserving of a nomination for Best Actor.

The internet immediately stormed with negative reactions when the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) missed out on Deadpool for what was possibly the most adored superhero movie, had been deemed unworthy of an Oscar nomination.

But hey, the Academy is known to be a little unpredictable which makes it very predictable in that sense. Like, Leonardo DiCaprio’s win last year for The Revenant over Bryan Cranston and Eddie Redmayne. DiCaprio’s Oscar was long overdue but he should have won an award for his much more notable works in Titanic, Blood Diamond, Revolutionary Road, etc. This year, they have chosen to nominate Viggo Mortensen for Best Actor instead. It is as though the Oscars don’t want to take superhero films seriously. Even Christopher Nolan’s marvellous Batman trilogy had failed to impress the Academy.

Any film that steps even an inch over to the fantasy genre is immediately seen in a completely different, immature light. It is astonishing that Game of Thrones gets the praise that it does at Emmys. Otherwise, superhero movies are usually seen as films that are just there for brainless entertainment and not considered good cinema which is as bewildering as it gets.

Ryan Reynolds acknowledged the Oscar nominations on Twitter as he congratulated the nominees.

It is noteworthy that Deadpool was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. Also, Reynolds was placed in the Best Actor – Motion Picture Comedy or Musical category. To be honest, Ryan Reynolds’ performance was more commendable than Ryan Gosling’s in La La Land, who bagged Best Actor at the Golden Globes and will probably be honoured with the award at the Oscars on February 26 as well.

Suicide Squad

The agitation from fans was vented out at Suicide Squad‘s nomination. Fans are so infuriated that they chose to ignore the fact that Suicide Squad, essentially an awful film, has been nominated for Best Makeup and Hairstyling and nothing else. Passengers’ two ludicrous nominations in the Best Original Score and Best Production Design categories has also stung Deadpool fans as now both movies- Suicide Squad and Passengers, are ‘Academy Award nominated Motion Pictures’. But oh, the horror doesn’t end there. Scott Derrickson’s Doctor Strange, with its firecracker magic and Inception-like world-warping, was nominated for Best Visual Effects.

Apart from Reynolds, the Academy also ignored the brilliance of Amy Adams in Arrival. Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who won a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor, was ignored over Nocturnal Animals co-star Michael Shannon. Needless to say, this year’s nominations have been more or less disappointing.
