The 71st BAFTAs was a posh affair, like always. Martin McDonagh’s Three Billboard Outside Ebbing, Missouri swept the evening with 5 wins, including Best Film. There were no surprises in the acting awards as everyone from Frances McDormand, Gary Oldman, Sam Rockwell to I Tonya’s Allison Janey won in their respective categories.
Oscar favourite Guillermo del Toro won Best Director for his cross species romance The Shape Of Water. The black dress code keeping in mind #MeToo & #TimesUp, was adhered to by most, except the Duchess of Cambridge. Where Get Out’s Daniel Kaluyya picked up his first BAFTA, even veteran lensman Roger Deakins opened his account for his spellbinding work in Blade Runner 2049. The evening’s best speech came from Sam Rockwell who quoted Alan Rickman while saying ‘There are no great actors, only great roles.’ The awards were hosted by veteran actor, Joanna Lumley.
